In hackers, after the newbie is arrested, some guys are out watching his house. One of them reads part of a hackers manifesto out loud. This is in fact a real manifesto written by a hacker named "Mentor" shortly before he was arrested.

During one part of the movie a student writes some bad poem and the teacher asks what the students name is. He gives the teacher the name Emmanuel Goldstein, who is the Editor-In-Chief of a hacker magazone called 2600.

The movie hackers is basically a cyberpunk movie. In the movie there are many references to a "Gibson" (the supercomputer they break into).

William Gibson is the man credited with starting the cyberpunk genre with his book Neuromancer.
