3D Realms Web Site Easter Egg - 404nord

1. Go to the 3D Realms Web Site at www.3drealms.com
2. Now, try to go to a page that *does not* exist. Any kind of nonsense words will work. For example: www.3drealms.com/asdf.html As long as the page doesn't exist, the egg will come up.

Most servers give you a generic 404 Not Found error if a page doesn't exit. 3D Realms gives you a 404NORD (whatever that means) and puts up a random image taken from around the office. However, the picture is color inverted (making the people in the pictures very scary looking). If you have Adobe Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, you can save the file to disk, open it in your photo editor, and invert the color to see the real picture.

A few months ago, someone there got a digital camera and apparently they've been having fun with it. There are over 30 random pictures and they may keep them constantly updated.

It is not an easter egg because eeggs.com says something is not an easter egg if it is easy to find, and this is easy to find!!

I think this is an "Easter Egg"! See Eeggs.com's description below. I would consider that any amusing tidbit like providing us with more a colorful error than 404 Not found is worth reporting and worth viewing. What a refreshing idea. Hats off to your creativity 3drealms! I look forward to more of your pictures! Eeggs.com's description: What is an "Easter Egg"? - The term "Easter Egg", as we use it here, means any amusing tidbit that creators hid in their creations.

It's NOT an easter egg, because and easter egg by definition is something that is out of the way and must be found by mistake or really trying. This is something ANYONE can find by mis-typing or something, and it isn't special.

404nord is clearly a fnord reference. What is fnord? I'll let whatis.com explain: Certain words are intended to be undefinable and "fnord" is one of them. First used in Robert Anton Wilson' trilogy, The Illuminati Papers, fnord has developed a group of devotees that meet at certain pages in cyberspace to celebrate the word's sense of the apparent but indefinite. The editors of whatis.com have spent far too much chasing the meaning of this elusive term, and this is what we are left with: Fnord is the space between the pixels on your screen. Fnord is the "ooo" in varooom of race cars. Fnord is the smallest number greater than zero. Fnord keeps a spare eyebrow in his pocket. In Wilson's trilogy, (based on reports from users), truth is revealed to those who know where to look. The enlightened can see fnord in the empty spaces between unjustified columns of text in newspapers and magazines. Called sticky spots, these spaces are not really blank, but contain fnord, visible only to those privy to heavily guarded secrets and occult powers. Fans of the novel began using the word as a private joke and the concept spread to many who had never read the book but had no trouble discovering new places where fnord must clearly exist.

Here's how it works in this case. If the random images have to do with 3drealms, then no, its not an egg, but if its pictures of the staff, or something else like that, than it is. YOU BE THE JUDGE!!! I just went to the 3dRealms page, it looks like they did a make over since I've last been there a few months ago.

I just tried it out...really funny. The title of the page was "404Fnord", so that 'fnord' comment seemed to be accurate.

The custom 404 message is gone, but the images are still in the same directory listed above... http://www.3drealms.com/images/404/goaway#.jpg Replace the "#" with the image number you want to see. After a quick check, it appears that numbers 2 through 50 are valid.

As of January 3, 2001, this egg works. It is titled 40FNORD and additionally, when you move your pointer around, the words "40FNORD - Page not found!" kind of follow it. And most if not all the pictures are of faces so they are probably of the staff. Check it out!

I went to 3drealms site and it worked, but it doesn't matter what goaway page number you give it. Its all the same. Just goaway.jpg is good enough, then just keep hitting Refresh/Reload/Re-whatever-your-browser-says and you'll cycle through the pictures and cryptic captions at random. You can run through them till your eyes start to hurt.

OK heres what I think 40fnord means. I may be wrong but when I said it outloud it kinda sounded like four o f'n foured. I dunno. Maybe wrong, but hey. Cool egg anyway. And the eggs still work cuz I just tried it. And you can use the regular paint to invert the pics.

Also, go through the pages long enough and you'll find the same words can show up. I bet they just use a random set of words to compose into a sentence.

I sent a post just prior to this stating that if you go to http://www.3drealms.com/index.shtml and remove the "e" from the word "index", it would work - but it only worked once. I then replaced the "e" and removed the "i", it worked a couple more times then I got the regular 404 message.

What is an "Easter Egg"? - The term "Easter Egg", as we use it here, means any amusing tidbit that creators hid in their creations. is this amusing? that's up to you to decide. is it hidden? it's not shown on their home page on how to see it, therefore it's hidden.

This does work, but previous statements about the "goaway#.jpg" aren't valid anymore. 3dRealms is using script now to give us something exiting and new everytime. Well, maybe every time. I'm sure that there are those out there that will try this hundreds of times to prove me wrong (...Spyder?)

Is it just me, or do the messages at the top of all these pages sound like lines from some text adventure? Maybe Apogee is on to something here... Dallas is mauve and the demon is arbitrary! The Developers of Incredible Power forever! (but not on my computer, because it's busted, and we never register our shareware, even if it knacks the fat like ROTT did) 007Bistromath, a drop in the bucket of wasted time. Fnord? Grok! These are the opinions of my cabbit.

To make this work you have to disable "friendly HTTP error messages" in IE. i won't go into detail on how to do this but if you do then it allows this easter egg to work on any version of everybody's favorite free browser created by everybody's favorite evil monopoly.

Well, april 2002, and still working perfectly with Mozilla. As someone said I guess only Netscape/Mozilla and Opera perhaps is preconfigured to use these 404 pages, standard IE will give you normal 404

Actually you can type in http://www.3drealms.com/images/index.shtml and you will get a random picture. Just click on refresh (or F5) and the picture will change.

How to get the trick to work: A) Use any browser except Internet Explorer. B) Under IE, go to Tools/Internet Options. Click Advanced. One of the check boxes is called "Use friendly HTTP error messages". Uncheck it.
