Bather, The (Cezanne, Paul) Easter Egg - Self Portrait

This painting is owned by the Museum Of Modern Art in New York City and is in the Lilly Bliss collection. It depicts an introspective, solitary male bather standing, hands on hips, on dry, sandy soil.

In the right background of the picture, over the bather's left shoulder, Cezanne painted a self portrait. It shows him exactly as he looked in photographs of the time (1860s).He stares out defiantly at the viewer.

It looks like Paul Cezanne, but maybe a cartoon version of him? I see an old man's face with bugged-out eyeballs...Actually, I can't see it at all. Can anyone help?

If you look over the bather's left shoulder (the right-hand side of the picture) and start at the very top and work your way down, it's barely visible. It is there (I think that's what I'm seeing), but you sort of have to use your imagination. Kind of like those 3-D Eye pictures they used to display at the mall. Just relax your eyes and try to see it. Use the link above---that's what I used. If it helps, try to memorize the man's face and then quickly look at the painting. It will be like a white contrast to the blue background.
