MAD Magazine Easter Egg - Weird?

On every single cover of mad in big letters, is the word mad. After the M in tiny letters, is the letters IND. (Possibly meaning industries.) Now if you put the first part together with the last part, it says MIND AD! Is that a coincedince?

This is correct: the 'ind' is put there to mean mind mad. It was put there so the title could be know as the mad meaning crazy as in the mind and not mad meaning angry.

Look, not for nothin', but MAD magazine is a participant in a trade group called Independent News Distributors. The only "Easter Egg" about the IND on the cover is the discussion-provoking placement after the "M."

Way back in the fifties, in Mad Magazine itself, they answered the question in the letters column in a rare moment of seriousness. Of course, WHY they place it at that spot and not some other is open to speculation. Way back then (and I suppose still) the whole magazine was a big Easter egg hunt! Back then, the big letters "MAD" on every cover had cartoon characters running around inside the letters, and one of the characters would be pointing to the "ind."

On the April 1996 cover #344 the IND is after the A in MAD. This is the only issue I have found that the placement is not after the M.

Mind Ad makes sense because it is saying that Mad Magazine is just a big mind ad (an advertisement that uses subliminal messages), possibly for the stuff they make fun off. Maybe the whole thing is just to drive you MAD! (sorry, I just had to take advantage of that joke)

I agree with Darkblade. Mind ad does make sense. Think about it. Almost everything in mad is a satire of a product/celebrity, etc., but maybe this is just to make you notice (and subsequently buy) these products!

It seems to me that all these thoeries could be right. Maybe someone at the Mad Corporation just decided to put that there, and then realized all the possible meanings it has. Or maybe it was just stuck there to see how many 1000s of idiots would spend their time trying to figure out what it meant.
