Internet Explorer Easter Egg - Blue Screen (v4.0)

1. Type "about:whatever" in your address box
2. Type "about:mozilla" in your address box
3. Notice any difference?
4. When Windows NT crashes, it often results in a crash screen with a blue background.
5. This subtile joke is implying that Netscape causes crashes. =)

*sigh* When windows crashes hard, and the GUI is dead, and all you have is a brutal reminder that there's a CLI under this monster, you get... A Blue Screen! That's the joke that IE thought they were telling us... Of course, No MS product to date has been stable, but if they wanna mouth off...

Uh, stupid... The egg actually has to do with the fact that blue is the trademarked color for Internet Explorer (look at the E). It has nothing to do with Netscape crashing. It has to do with the fact that when you type about: Mozilla in Netscape, you get a diatribe on Netscape kicking butt, and MS's team is saying, "So what. Here's our diatribe. Our browser speaks for itself".

i don't know what happened to my first comment but you can put html tags into the About: text. you can add background colors and have a title and put frames in it and everything. this might be handy if you have a frames page and one frame does not need much html. you could put the whole page into the name of the document and not need to have another html document

Have you ever tried it on Netscape? It's so different. This is what it reads: And the beast shall come forth surrounded by a rolling cloud of vengeance. The house of the unbelievers shall be razed and they shall be scorched to the earth. Their tags shall blink until the end of days. from The Book Of Mozilla, 12:10

If you try it on Netscape 6, you get this in white italics with a black background: And the beast shall be made legion. Its numbers shall be increased a thousand thousand fold. The din of a million keyboards like unto a great storm shall cover the earth, and the followers of Mammon shall tremble. from The Book of Mozilla, 3:31 (Red Letter Edition)

The "about:" URLS are really stored in MSHTML.dll - use a hex or binary editor to have a look, and you can see the Mozilla etc. entries. Type in this: "about:PostNotCached" and you get the Warning page like when you click back on a HTTPS connection.

I just have two things to say: The blue screen is not the same colour as "The Blue Screen Of Death", it's the "Microsoft" blue. Internet Explorer isn't based on Mozilla.

What are you talking about, Dark Soul? They're separate programs created by two different companies. Well, not completely separate, since MS made IE to compete with Netscape. But still, IE is hardly "based on Mozilla".

If you put about:mozilla in Firefox (2.0), you get this in white italics on a red screen: And so at last the beast fell and the unbelievers rejoiced. But all was not lost, for from the ash rose a great bird. The bird gazed down upon the unbelievers and cast fire and thunder upon them. For the beast had been reborn with its strength renewed, and the followers of Mammon cowered in horror. from The Book of Mozilla, 7:15
