Super Mario Sunshine Easter Egg - Dolphin References

The codename of the next generation Nintendo system was first announced back in May 1999, it was to be called "Project Dolphin". How it was meant to evoke images of fun gameplay and connectivity we'll never know, but it was an enduring name. However, when the system and software was unveiled just one year later at E3 2000 the Dolphin had been officially renamed the Gamecube.

Of course, with Nintendo's taste for in-jokes it was only a matter of time before Dolphin references turned up all over the place. And they did so en masse, starting with last-generation N64 games. Even now, as we approach the end of the Gamecube's lifespan, references are still appearing in games.

Super Mario Sunshine has more references than any other. Not only is the game set on Delfino Island (Italian for dolphin) that is shaped like a dolphin, but Delfino Plaza is covered in dolphin statues. On the Noki Bay stage you will also have to clear up graffiti in the image of a dolphin.

Comments

The reason why they changed the name from Project Dolphin to Gamecube is because Project Dolphin was a codename they used before the console was released, same reason why the Revolution was renamed to the Wii
