Windows 98 Easter Egg - Windows 98 Team

1. In the Windows directory go to "Application Data\Microsoft\WELCOME"
2. Create a Shortcut for the file Weldata.exe by right clicking on the file and selecting "Create Shortcut"
3. Right click on the newly created shortcut and select "Properties"
4. In the shortcut tab, add the following at the end of the "Target" edit box " You_are_a_real_rascal". This causes the application WELDATA.EXE to be called with the argument 'You_are_a_real_rascal'
5. Now in the "Run" combobox select "Minimized"
6. Click OK and double click the shortcut & ENJOY!

When you open the shortcut properties, the target would be in quotes: "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\WELCOME\WELDATA.EXE" So you need to add this AFTER the quotes. Cut and paste this: "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\WELCOME\WELDATA.EXE" you_are_a_real_rascal

Well..hm..worked for me - kindof. Thanks to the comment above mine here. My problem, on the other hand, was that when I got the window saying "Windows98 team" I got a box saying "There was an error in the script on this page, expected blabla, do you want to continue running scripts on this page?" I clicked yes, but that was it..so..well..half-way through it anyways :)

I´ve just created a shortcut for the egg-thing. I don´t know where to write "you_are_a_real_rascal". English is not my native language so I don´t understand what "target path" mean. I´ve tried to write as you´telling me to but the computer says that the filename is not valid. Please help me!

I followed the instructions and it worked fine for me. The target line should read exactly this: "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\WELCOME\WELDATA.EXE" You_are_a_real_rascal . Just copy and paste this in. It works for me!

it does work- by the way- "combo box" refers to what is otherwise known as a "drop-down list"- before you click "ok" on the shortcut properties window, look to the last drop-down list- by default the choice is "normal window"- just change that to "minimized"

The "run" combo box is on the page where you edited the target name. Underneath "Start In" and "Shortcut" you will "Run". Select minimized. Hopefully that will help you. I haven't had an luck with this one.

Ok Jade, When you right-click on the shortcut and select 'properties' the window that opens will have two tabs at the top. Click the one that says 'Shortcut'(if not already there). The window will now have some lines that say: Target Type: Application Taqrget Location: Welcome Target: _______________________ <-- This is the target textbox (Target Path) Type it in the above box AFTER the last quotation mark. If you put it before the last quotation mark, it will give you the 'invalid path' error (or something like that) Hope this works for you.

Ok people, here it is. You have to capitalize the y in you or else you will get a script error, and you have to enter You_are_a_real_rascal after the quotes! It should look exactly as shown here: "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\WELCOME\WELDATA.EXE" You_are_a_real_rascal You should copy and paste it or copy it exactly or you will get errors.

The biggest problem seems to be a simple space. If you don't put a space betweem the last quote and The capital Y then it won't run correctly.

Want to become a Win98 developer? I was able to copy the Welcome folder to a different location. Then, I edited the desktop shortcut to point to this new location (it was on a network drive). The easter egg didn't run, but it did create an html file in that location. It was named "~xnnn.htm", where the nnn was a number. Running this file brought up my web browser, where I could view, edit and save the source code for this egg. Suddenly, *I* was one of the developers, as I added my name to the list ... several times. Great Fun!

OK, HERE'S HOW TO GET IT TO WORK RIGHT: 1.Go into the directory. 2.Now right-click on the Weldata.exe file and choose 'Create Shortcut' 3.In the target field (the box next to target:) type AT THE END OF THE THING THAT'S IN THERE: You_are_a_real_rascal So it has "c:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Welcome\Windata.exe" You_are_a_real_rascal with a space between the last " and the capital Y. hmmm i did all i was told and then gave up and copied the formula.. then i decided to play around and pressed the find target button and that brought up gibberish, is that totally wrong? is that what it is?

OK. Open the folder C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\Welcome Right-drag the icon to the desktop and drop it. Choose Create Shortcuts here from the menu. Right click on the new icon on the desktop (you may need to minimize windows) Choose properys Go onto the Shortcut tab There should be a box saying Target Path to the left of it. Click on the box. Press End on the Keyboard. Type: You_are_a_real_rascal Press enter Open the icon on the desktop (GONG).... This is the same window as the one that pops up at the end of the Windows 98 Team 2 Egg.

No offence, you guys I know the challenge of finding easter eggs is all part of the fun but if you're having so much bother why not just give up? Perhaps the hardware makers should make it a BIT easier for us. BTW, yes I am new to easter eggs so please excuse my naivety I just don't see the point of going to all that trouble. P.S I also tried several methods to get this to work and nope, nothing happening.

I think that everybody having trouble may be forgetting one thing. Make sure you make it "Minimized". I had it Full Screen by accident and nothing happened. But then I read it again very carefully, and found the Minimize step. So make sure you select Minimized.

I got this to work in Windows 2000, ME, 98 and 95! I just took MEMBG.DLL,WELDATA.EXE, and WELCOM98.WAV and put them on a floppy... Then I put MEMBG.DLL in C:\Windows\System\ and made a shortcut to WELDATA on A: and ran it... Works.... :-)

I think the script error is coming from newer versions of Internet Explorer. I keep getting the error and I have IE5.5 SP1. It might only work with older versions like 4.x.

Hi Jade? I had that problem, about the invalid filename. When you type it in, make sure there is a space between the end of the first bit, and the beginning of the You_are_a_rascal. ie. "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\WELCOME\WELDATA.EXE" "You_are_a_rascal" but it should all go in one line!!! Hope I've been of help to you!!! Byeeeeeeeeeeee :0)

All right, Jade, there should be a box in the Properties window that contain exactly this. "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\WELCOME\WELDATA.EXE" Properties is the last item on the list when you right click the shortcut's icon. After "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\WELCOME\WELDATA.EXE" type exactly one space and then type You_are_a_real_rascal Make sure that in the menu where it now says Normal window it is changed to minimize (that means make smaller) GOOD LUCK!

Hi Jade, From what I gathered when you right click to create a shortcut a form or window pops up. At the top it should say "Shortcut to ...". Below it you should see tabs. One of the tabs should be called "Shortcut". Click on that. What you should see next is: Target type: Application Target location: (some path...) Target: This is where you type the rascal thing. Read previous posts on how to type the rascal thing. I'm at work when I read this. Machine running WINNT. Exactly what happens when one is successful... very curious!

Whoa, I got this thing the day I saw it! The trick is: Remember the friggin' space after .EXE! If you forget, you'll get a dialogue box that says "the path to blah blah blah is not valid" or something like that.

If it's any consolation, when I got the HTML gibberish screen, I noticed that deep with in the characters were all of the names! So, if it still doesn't quite work, just play that .wav file (it's in the same folder where you found Weldata.exe) and just think of your own pictures. It's not as good, but it'll keep you going until it works. Good luck Jade.

Firstly one tip:when the egg is running,type in the name,for example, Aaron Higgins it will display the list with this name on the top. Second,the comment about how to view html source,was posted earlier. Third,I've found,that the html source of the egg is in file membg.dll in encrypted form,the encryption method is known for me.

In my Welcome directory, I found a pre-made shortcut called 'Credits' which did the same thing. PS. If anyone is having trouble doing it this way, try doing it via Date/Time etc. like in the other egg.

To every one who is getting the script error, it could be the version of Windows 98 that you are using. Some companies (such as HP, Compaq, IBM, ect.) have modified versions of Windows for use with their systems. If you are using Windows 98 Second Edition, then you should have no problem. If you are using Windows 98 Second Edition from a restoration disk or from the originally installed Windows 98 system, then there isn't much you can do to fix the problem. The biggest WOW about this egg is that whoever found it must have gone to a lot of trouble to find it. It just one of those things you appricate for being there. If you are bound and determined to see this egg, then follow these instructions: 1. Goto C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\WELCOME. 2. There should be a file labeled Weldata.exe, Right Click on this file then click Create Shortcut. 3. Right Click on the shortcut that was just created and click Properties 4. There should be a white box labeled "Target:". Highlight everything in that box and press Delete on your keyboard. 5. Copy this text inclucing quotation marks by highlighting it then pressing CTRL+C or clicking Edit then Copy. "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\WELCOME\WELDATA.EXE" You_are_a_real_rascal 6. Click in the white box labeled Target: and press CTRL+V. The above text should have appeared in the white box. 7. Click the down arrow beside the box labeled Run and select Minimized. 8. Click the Apply Button then the Ok button. 9. Double click on the shortcut and enjoy the list of names and pictures.

It worked for me just fine. I think you should do the steps that he told you to do, then copy and paste THIS and EXACTLY THIS: "C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\WELCOME\WELDATA.EXE" You_are_a_real_rascal into the target box. Then follow the rest of the steps.
