Red Dwarf Easter Egg - Doctor Who Reference in Red Dwarf Cargo Bay

This egg appears in one of the initial seasons of Red Dwarf, quite possibly the first one in which Starbig appears. I cannot pinpoint the episode since my collection is unfortunately very incomplete.
In the cargo bay of the Red Dwarf (where Starbug is taking off in one scene) a tiny blue british police box can be seen nestled upon one of the platforms in the background. It is only on the screen for a second, but it's definitely an homage to Doctor Who (it's the Tardis!), one of the first shows to successfully (if only sporadically) combine comedic elements with true science fiction.

(quick side note - the Tardis appears in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation on a piece of background furniture as well)

I know the episode you mean, and as a hardened smeggie I can tell you now that it IS NOT the tardis. It is in fact Red Dwarfs other transport craft, "Blue Midget" so there! Any self-respecting smeggie would know THAT!

This chap is correct, there is a TARDIS in the Red Dwarf cargo bay. It was put in shot by RD's Visual Effects guy Mike Tucker - who is a Doctor Who fan.

It is definitely the Tardis from Dr Who- it fact that it is there is mentioned on the Red Dwarf website.

It is referred to in the story as the Blue Midget, but the craft is actually the TARDIS...and the TARDIS was the Doctor's time/space travel machine in Doctor Who. As to why it always takes the form of a Police Box, that is because it has a broken Chameleon Circuit, which, if in working order, would allow the TARDIS to blend into its surroundings. Example: If the TARDIS landed in a parking garage, it would most likely take the form of either a support pillar or a vehicle of some sort. As to what TARDIS stands for, it stands for Time And Relative Dimension(s) (I've heard it's "dimension", but "dimensions" seems more logical) In Space As to the explanation of "dimensionally transcendental", that merely means that the outer shell of the TARDIS has a gateway into another dimension, and it is this dimension that houses the TARDIS's interior.

The blue midget looks nothing like the tardis, unless you pushed it over and magled it a lot and added other bits of metal like treads and so on.

Found it now, Series 2 Episode 3 - thanks for the memory It IS the TARDIS. Read the 'Collectors booklet' with the dvd and it tells you. There are a few more things wrong with the episode which I wont go into now, I'll write them all down soon

the official booklet with the official dvd of series 3 states that it IS the tardis. any official smeggie would know that! personally i cant see it though. ill have to watch again more closely and screenshot it.
