In the movie Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy (2005) in the scene when Ford talks to Arthur about their first meeting..Ford stands in the middle of the street ready to shake hands with a car right before Arthur saves him, the car is in fact a Popular model of a car Also known as a Ford Prefect.

Of course--that's the story behind Ford's name: he thought that Cars were the intelligent species on Earth, and chose to be named like one of them.

Actually, the "cars being the dominate species" is just the movie explaination for the American audience. In Adams' "Guide to the Guide", he explains that when Ford was looking at the names in the England area, he saw lots of "Ford Prefects" and figured it would be a normal name to have that wouldn't draw suspicion.
