Amateur, The Easter Egg - Hidden Author
The dedication for the book has a very interesting case. Early on in the book a cipher developed by Francis Bacon is described as the main character is searching for a hidden in Shakespeare's texts. If one uses this cipher to decode the dedication of the book, the following message is revealed:
CHARHELLERWRITTHISBOOK
Which when spaces are added: CHAR HELLER WRIT THIS BOOK
or
Charlie Heller Wrote This Book.
This just so happens to be our main character. This is interesting because in the preface, Littell basically says that the book may or may not be a true story because he cannot verify it for sure. It also describes how the character the book is about , who Littell got all his information from, would not have been able to write the story due to government control over all his publications.
So perhaps it is a true story and this is Littell's way of letting the people know that Heller really did exist and this really is his true story.
