Simpsons, The Easter Egg - Homer's Name

As has been mentioned many times, "The Simpsons" is full of movie references, but perhaps one of the most blatant is the name Homer Simpson...

If you've seen the movie (based on the novel) "Day of the Locust," then you know that Donald Sutherland played the character Homer Simpson, an accountant who is driven to a nasty, desperate act because of his unrequited love for the character played by Karen Black. The original Simpson, like his namesake, was kind of a clueless loser that you still felt a little sorry for.

uh... you dont always have to look so deep into things (as my english teacher needs to find out). actually, homer, marge, and the rest of the family are named after matt groening's family. the only exception is that bart takes the place of matt. (he got the name cuz its an annagram from brat.) hope i cleared things up!

Homer Simpson was also the name of the safety inspector at Three Mile Island when they had the accident. He tried to sue FOX because of the reference but lost.

I thought Matt replaced his own name 'cos it would be too obvious if Bart was called Matt. I didn't know that he decided on Bart because it was an anagram of Brat. And does anyone know what Homer's middle name is? I think it's the same as Bart's and begins with J.

They revealed Homer's Middle initial in the episode where Homer became a Hippy (think it was called "D'oh-in in the Wind"). The "J" stands for "Jay"! Groan!

The "J" was, indeed, originally a nod to "Rocky and Bullwinkle." The characters of Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose had no middle names, just initials. This is also where Michael J. Fox got his middle initial for SAG registration, as he also has no middle name but was/is a fan of "Rocky and Bullwinkle" (he needed the initial as there was already a "Michael (NMI) Fox" in the Screen Actor's Guild).

I agree Rell. Look, people. You're supposed to point out eggs. Not rave on and on about some stupid episode you saw thirty years ago on a freight train to Missouri while your cat ate the toe-nail clippings of the guy sitting next to you who just HAPPENED to be named Sideshow Bob, which just HAPPENS to be the name of one of the freaking SIMPSONS CHARACTERS!! Homer's middle name "Jay" can also be taken as a drug reference since it was revealed at the hippie farm(jay is another term for a joint - a marijuana cigarette to the uninitiated). I do realize that this doesn't make sense chronologically since Mother Simpson wasn't part of the Movement when Homer was born, and wouldn't have her son a dope name back then.

Back to the Michael J. Fox bit (sorry!), but he did have a middle name, Andrew, but then his initial were Michael A. Fox, but he didn't want jokes about his name (Michael: A Fox!) when he went into the S.A.G., so he did change it to J. but also not as a nod to the J, in Jay Ward's cartoon characters, but rather as homage to Michael J. Don't you know that Matt once said in an interview that his dad's name is Homer, his mom's is Marge, and his sisters' are Lisa and Maggie. Bart is just an anagram of brat. Now someone tell me why he choose Simpson, and I'll give you a cookie!

wasn't there a whole episode about how homer was watching a sitcom, and a charachter had the name homer simpson, and he started out cool, but then as the show (police cops) got bigger, the charachter got stupid, and homer was pissed? that was awesome.

Torwell is right. In Rocky and Bullwinkle, the "J" stands for Jay ("J") Ward. he is referenced a lot in rocky and bullwinkle. For example, Rocky and Bullwinkle were once arrested for J-Walking. Bullwinkle proptly said, "You mean J-Warding." Also, in the movie, we see a part of a school called the "J" Ward.

The only person on this discussion who is right is sobek (and that other guy) about the characters being named after Matt's family members and Bart being an anagram for brat. I know this is a stupid comment because it's so obvious but I just wanted to pronunce my support for the person that is right.

Many famous people use the initial 'J'. Michael J Fox, Bullwinkle J Moose. J is just anonimous. Obediah J Springfield Bart J Simpson Homer J Simpson Everyone in the Simpsons is called J, except Montgomery C Burns.

I have no idea if this is true, but it's just a thought I had: Jay is also the middle name of renowned Harvard evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould (appeared on the "angel" ep of the Simpsons). Given all the Harvard writers on the staff of the Simpsons, I thought it was a possibility that this was where Homer's name came from. Any ideas?

Actually Noodles, Mr Burns' name is Charles Montgomery, Not Montgomery Charles. Yes it's a littl odd, but this is The Simpsons so it doesn't matter.

I believe matt groening himself mentioned, on one of the audio comentaries ,from, i think season one, that although Homer was the name of his father the characters name was also related to 'day of the locust'
