Lord of the Rings Easter Egg - Elvish Translation

On the bottom of the title page of The Lord of the Rings it has something written in elvish. It says "of Westmarch by John Ronald Reuel Tolkein. Herein is set force the history of the war of the ring and the return of the king as seen by the hobbits." J.R.R. Tolkien was a linguist and created the languages before the story. He had to make a story for the languages after.

That is really cool. I am a huge Lord of the Rings fan, myself. I read the books when I was in sixth grade and that was two years ago. I have tried to figure out some of the elvsh languages. Samwise Gamgee is the greatest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The languages that Tolkien created were based largely on the Finnish language. Since not many people knew of the language during Tolkien's time, and still not many today, it was the perfect language to use as a basis for the Elvish language.

For anyone who is curious, the Dwarvish runes at the top of the title page read "The Lord of the Rings: Translated from the Red Book."

If you like LotR, the you must read The Silmarillion & The Book of Lost Tales, Vol 1 & 2. These books contain the history of Middle Earth before LotR took place. How Elves & Dwarves & Hobbits came to be, the complete lineage of Elrond, Sauron, etc, etc... Even notes on where he got his ideas from. It is quite amazing.

J.R.R. Tolkien was a professor of anglican language(i believe, coorect me if i'm wrong). I think that his understanding of how language is made make s the elven and dwarven and all the languages in the books so much more real. For those who have only seen the movie, READ THE BOOKS! The movies are awesome, but the books are even better.

In the Hobbit the words on the map read: Stand by the grey stone when the thresh knocks with the setting sun and the last light of durin's day will shine upon the keyhole. Also the words on the book cover of the return of the king read (clockwise): one ring to rule them all, one ring to bring them all, and one ring to find them in the darkness bind them. I can write in runes like these all day long... Although I'd like to learn actual elvish, like what is written on the ring.
