Smith, Kevin Easter Egg - Jaws References

Kevin Smith includes many references to Jaws in his films. Jaws is no doubt one of the greatest movies of all time (regardless of how fake the Shark was). Some of them include:

Clerks: Randal saying "Salsa Shark ... We're gonna need a bigger boat." was also said by Brody in Jaws "You're gonna need a bigger boat"

Mallrats: Brody... The name Brody is also the name of the police chief in Jaws. TS Quint... Quint is the name of the skipper in Jaws.

Chasing Amy: Hooper X... Matt Hooper is the name of Richard Dreyfuss' character in Jaws.

Chasing Amy: The conversation between Banky and Alyssa in Meow Mix about "permanent injuries" is almost exactly the same conversation between Matt Hooper and Quint in Jaws.

There are probably a bunch more. Add them as comments if you know of any!

you left out what it hought to be themost obvious jaws reference int he trilogy (you may have left it out because it was so obvious, i don't know)but in the begining of mallrats, when T.S. and broddie are discusisng how they were dumped, T.S. mentions that hew was going ot propose to brandy at the universal theme park, "when jaws pops out of the water"

More reference in the "Mallrats" character names: T.S. stands for 'the shark' and Bruce (Brody Bruce) was the name of the rubber shark in "Jaws".

So where's the reference in "Dogma"? Anyone? Dang, looks like I'll have to see both movies again ...

I've only seen Dogma once, but I know it was written before Smith wrote Clerks, and it's also his first movie which is not part of the "New Jersey Trilogy", so perhaps this is why there's no Jaws Reference. I could be wrong though...

Dogma ~is~ in the Jersey "Trilogy" (...more like a saga w/ the 5th part coming out in August.) Anyway, another reference is T.S.'s full name is T.S. Quint, Quint being the name of the captain of the Orca in Jaws.

Snake is wrong about TS Quint's name being a "coincidence". For those of you who have Mallrats on DVD, Kevin Smith goes into detail in the commentary about how the names Brody and Quint are lifted from Jaws, and that he wanted Hooper X in Mallrats so that he could have the three of them sitting in the food court discussing the permanent injuries scene (which ended up getting scrapped until Chasing Amy). By the way, I have never heard an explanation for the significance of the number 37 in the View Askewniverse. Does anybody know what it means? I know Veronica sucked 37 dicks according to Clerks, but was there something else about the number 37 that I missed?

Umm rubberducks comment was totally wrong.Clerks was made before dogma here is how it goes; Clerks which takes place on saturday,Mallrats came out next but took place on the friday before because the girl that dies in mallrats she dies the day before and in clerks there going to her funeral. Then out came chasing amy, and finally dogma.Which i might add is in the new jersey series because there are hundereds of refrences and thats were almost all of it takes place.

I don't know who's seen all the episodes of the "Clerks" cartoon, but in one of them, Randall says "I understand that you're going to ignore this particular problem until it swims up and bites you on the ass." He then comes back into the room and says "That's from Jaws." :-)

Slybunnyboy is right the films are all linked and set in that order. If you watch "Chasing Amy" when Holden and Alyssa talk about living only a town apart they talk about the girl who died in "Mallrats" and the funeral in "Clerks" and also her friend who screwed a dead body. Although Smith has indicated that he wished to make "Dogma" after clerks (or it might have been before) but due to the budget he needed he scraped it.

There was a Jaws reference in Dogma, but it was cut. During the scene where the main characters are trying to talk Cardinal Glick out of having the ceremony, Jay starts playing behind one of those fold-up things people change behind. He picks up the cardinal's hat (one of those pointy hats like the Pope has, don't know what they're called) and starts moving the pointy part around behind the changing thingy. It's not that funny and you can see why it got cut.

I might be wrong, but I don't think that T.S. in T.S. Quint's name is supposed to be "the Shark." Given that the main character in Clerks was named Dante (I'm guess a reference to the writer) I assumed upon first viewing that the name T.S. was another reference to another writer, T.S. Elliot.

Also in the CLERKS:UNCENSORED DVD Randal and Dante are having a discussion about how Randal is making up the "mootaba" virus, Dante says something along the lines of,"That's why you didn't use the toilet after seeing Jaws." (or something like that) And Randal says,"Sharks swim in water, there's water in my toilet." Dante says,"Sharks swim in salt water" and Randal says" there salt water in my toilet" I just thought that was funny, Hopefully I'm not the only one.

The most obvious reference to Jaws in all of Mallrats, even over the reference to Quint asking her to marry him on the ride, is the fact that at the end, they really do get married on the ride. Good times, folks.

In Clerks:The animation (uncensored) someone has mentioned the motava (prolly spelled it wrong) and quote references, but it was funny that no one mentioned the obvious. When they flash the different stars they have met, the guy that walks in the door and gets eaten by a shark is from jaws, (he also gets eaten in the same episode after they start talking about happy days re-runs). I don't remember the actor or his name though.

I am a Universal Studios Hollywood tour guide, and in the tour guide script it mentions that Spielberg named the Jaws shark "Bruce" after his lawyer at the time. In Mallrats, Brodie's last name is "Bruce". So "Brodie Bruce" and "T.S. Quint" from Mallrats got their names from 3 Jaws characters, not 2 - Brodie, Quint and Bruce The Shark (T.S.) - Also the final scene in Mallrats with the shark was shot at Universal Studios Hollywood, even though the movie calls it Universal Studios Florida. In Florida, Jaws is a separate ride, not part of a tour.

you guys are leaving out the star wars references too. in clerks they talk about sub-contractors working on the death star. in mallrats jay and bob talk about the stage having a weakness like the death star. and if you want to stretch alittle the security guard's name is La Fours (the force) and bobs trying the jedi mind trick for most of the movie. in dogma when bethany, jay and bob are sitting at the cafe how he feels like he's hes Han and Bob is Chewy and they are in that "F***** up bar". and Jay an silent bob strike back is completely obvious through the entire movie. Carrie Fisher being the nun. Mark Hamil is c*ck knocker. the "blunt saber" battle, even the title of the movie is in star wars font. i know their are references in Chasing Amy but i dont remember. can someone help me out

Actually NoNameCanExplain that was a knock off of that shark movie *deep blue sea i believe was the title* with L L Cool J. The actor was Samuel L. Jackson. It was a mock of the hilarious scene were he gives this big get up and go motivational speech then not even a second after he finished it he gets ripped a new one *actually a couple of new ones* by a group of sharks. Trust me i have seen Clerks the cartoon more times then i can count and that movie deep blue sea more times then i wish to count... which is one. One time was enough.
