Once... Easter Egg - Hidden Title References
In James Herbert's latest novel, "Once...", in chapter 20, "Faerefolkis", the main character Thom is being shown fairies and other fairytale creatures by a girl called Jennet. She points out various creatures and gives them names. The first one is called Ekulf, but she says he is also known as Trebreh or Semaj, depending on what story he is telling. The first name is one of Herberts novels, "Fluke", spelt backwards, and the other two are James Herbert spelt backwards! Part of the passage says that - "He claims to know all the old tales, the sad ones, the happy ones, and all the ancient riddles and songs, but sometimes I'm sure he makes them up as he goes along" - which is a very obvious reference to Herbert himself being an author and storyteller. A bit further on more names of fairy creatures are mentioned and amongst them are, "Others", "Magic", "Jonah", "Rats", "Lair", "Shrine", "Moon", "Sepulchre" and "Survivor", all spelt backwards, and all of which are Herbert novels!
