Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones Easter Egg - The Shadow of Impending Fate

Just before Anakin leaves the Lar's homestead to find his lost mother, he is standing next to the domed entrance to the dwellings. Padme comes up the stairs, calls his name and as he turns, the shadow cast on the wall is that of Darth Vader. Moments later we see the first initial slip to the dark side, as he slaughters the entire tribe of Tusken Raiders.

Yes i noticed this to, its kind of cool if you think about it... But its not very hard to discover...its very obvious for anyone who knows what Darth vader looks like...

Nice try, but I think this is just how it appears to look. It is merely a coincidence, as far as I can tell. I don't think George Lucas would put in something that obvious. The shadow kind of look like Darth Vader, but I think that is an illusion.

No, it wasn't the shadow of Darth Vader. Part of the promotional materials for Episode I showed young Anikin casting the shadow of Darth Vader onto a wall, which is what you were probably thinking of. I saw Episode II yesterday, and the shadow scene reminded me of this - so I made sure to look for Vader in the shadow. But, he wasn't there.

With regard to the comment made about the Shadow on the small round hut type building being that of Darth Vader. The shadow cast looks like Darth Vader because Anakin is wearing a cloak type outfit and his hair is styled like Vader mask, the shadow is just normal.

I'm sorry but I've seen the movie several times and that is not a shadow of Vader, it is Anakins own shadow. Lucas probably threw that in there after the reaction to the EP1 shadow trick.

I thought I saw this too, but if you look harder, you see that his cloak is shaped like Darth Vader's. This makes the shadow on the hut appear to be Darth's, but the head shape doesn't match.

I noticed this to but none of my friends saw it, even the two who know everything about Star Wars, also this isn't really an Egg but when Yoda is meditating while Annakin is killing all the raider you can hear a voice yell "Annakin NO!" according to my tow friends that was the voice of Qui Gon Gin, from Eposide 1, I checked and sure enough it was him. Also apperntly somwherein the movie you can see the guy who plays C3PO.

I saw this egg, and think it was filmed just for that purpose. Dialogue occurs offscreen, forcing you to watch what's on screen...just their shadows. Why have the conversation off screen? to focus your attention on the shadow of Anakin that with a padawan ponytail, bears a striking resemblance to Vader's helmet. It's called forshadowing.

It is Darth Vaders shadow because Darth Vader is Anakin and Anakin is Darth Vader. Why do people have to get so worked up about it and argue that it definitely is or isn't, in my humble opinion I think it is made to resemble Darth Vaders shadow as, surprise surprise, an easter egg!!

For eternaldragon77, I noticed that to, Qui-Gon's voice in the meditation scene and your right about Anthony Daniels, see my other egg "Out of Costume?". As for orbit, I'm quite aware of the previous promotional material, that's not what I was thinking of at all, I'm talking about the very first shadow, the one on the join between the door and wall and not any of the following shadows shown.

Sorry not this time- It is not Darth Vader. I recall the same "Egg" in TPM, and I quickly chose to look the shadow with this mindset, the body looks somewhat like vader, but, the head/helemt is wrong, perhaps Anakin has the body of darth vader, but not yet the brains of him (head).

When they went to Tatooine, I looked out for Vader's shadow, and found something that resembled it enough for me to turn around to my friends to point it out. I think they put in something that resembles it to show Anakin's movement towards the dark side. By the way, at least Obi-Wan regards Vader and Anakin as separate entities: see Episode VI

Perhaps one sun has already set, and in the next scene, the speederbike scene, it appears as if the final sun is setting, so chronologically, it would make sense. (What?!!? Right, The shadow is made to look like Darth Vader's as a "foreshadow" of what is going to happen in the future but there is one little detail which no one has seemed to notice as yet - when Anakin is talking, the mouth of the shadow moves which indicates that it is not of Darth Vader, but of Anakin, as Darth Vader has a fixed helmet which doesn't move! Also, this is not an Egg as it is not hidden and is very obvious. Also, as it is Foreshadowing it does not fit the criteria for being an egg (see http://www.eeggs.com/addanegg.html) for details. There you Go!!

OK, I decided to see the movie again after reading a lot of the rhetoric on this issue. Whether this was put in deliberately post production or a result of Annakin's "adjusted" pony tail, it clearly is one, albeit small reference to the impending fate of Annakin. In fact the whole movie as we know is set up with lots of foreshadowing. Whatever your position on this is, it makes for a nice debate. I personally will go with the "Vader" shadow. The reality is that the Star Wars myth in essence is really around Vader and his "ultimate" redemption in EP6.

Oh, that shot was meant to be a nod to the posters, or a way of fortelling. Who would shoot a bunch of shadows, unless it fortold or showed something? That would just be crazy. Lucas, I'm quite sure he did it on purpose. The shadow DID resemble Vader. (Who cares if the head is not exactly proportionate to the body?) As for the meditiation Scene, I believe the Meditiation scene (Yoda is Meditating, you hear the voice, "No, Annikan, no!" is actually Obi wan's voice, since Obi Wan says the same exact phrase later in the film. I don't believe Qui Gonn ever yelled out, "No, Annikan, No!" while you hear a bunch of Light sabre sounds. It would make sense that it is actually Obi Wan, because if you are good with the force, you can "reach" into the future a little bit. Obi wan yelled this at Annikan during the movie (Can't remember the exact moment.). Also, Young Annikan would not be trained how to use the light sabre until the council agreed he should be trained. Yoda was teaching the "younglings" how to use the sabre, using the same method Obi Wan used to train Luke in a New Hope. In the movie, Young Annikan never really did anything bad around Qui Gonn. Nothing to cause Qui Gonn to yell out like Yoda envisioned. Therefore, I think it was Obi Wan, and Yoda was sensing the future.

You all are so funny to read your comments! YES IT IS!!! NO IT'S NOT!!! BLAH BLAH BLAH! Hey, here's a thought: maybe it is supposed to be a natural shadow and they positioned him so it would resemble Vador's. It's not like a different shadow, or totally Vador's shadow that they stuck in there by computer, but probably positioned Anakin so the shape of his shadow would show it.

In this scene, if you pay attention to the shadow you can realize that it's not meant to be a shadow of Darth Vader, but looks like one because of Anakin's hair-do. That little pony tail thing.

Well I think the whole vader shadow thing is not ment to look exactly like darth otherwise people would spend time trying to pick out all the details from anakin to put together the darth shadow but on the other hand if it looks sort of like darth it forces people to really look. Lucas is a very capable director. He knows what he wants from a scene so why would he set up a scene with just the shadows. The director has the power to make you look where they want you to look. If it doesn't have a point then why film it. Everyone has seen the poster and unconsiously they saw the hut and the shadow they would be looking I think lucas put it in there as just an interesting scene. Its not a hard egg to find but I think its one. Eggs are ment to be found one way or another if they are to hard to find then no one ever does and they are eggs only to the person that put them there. Whats the fun if no one can ever figure it out.

I just saw AOTC for the fourth time yesterday, and the "shadow" seems to say more than one thing, at least to me. Of course, the body does indeed look like Vader, because Anakin's body is one and the same; check out the height! The Jedi robe resembles the robe worn by Vader and would cast a similar shadow. But, I do believe that it was also a "foreshadowing" of things to come, things that we already know. In addition, the "shadow" was a manner of also foretelling of "shadowy" times to follow. I wasn't hooked before AOTC, now I'm riveted. Very bittersweet, and a lot more depth to it than I'd imagined, particularly if one reads the novels, where the thoughts of the characters are laid open. Okay, I went on further than the "egg," but I'm intrigued, 25 years later, and the story is only now being told. Okay, I'll take it to discussions (please don't flame me...my first time here and I'm out of sunscreen)...

As far as the "Vader" shadow - it appeared to be Anakin's actual shadow but I think the scene was shot in such a way so as to resemble Vader's silhouette. Obviously quite a number of people have noticed this shadow and therefore, I would say that it was done intentionally. As far as the "No, Anakin, no!" debate (the voice yelling during Yoda's meditation) - it is Qui-Gon yelling this. He is now part of the voice, thus enabling Yoda to hear his words. I am a huuuuuge Ewan McGregor fan and it is definitely not his (Obi-Wan's) voice. For those who want further proof, Liam Neeson is actually credited for this and you can view it on imdb.com. =)

To SciFi_fan, you are wrong. That was indeed Qui Gon Jinn who said those words during Yoda's meditation. He says it like "Anakin! Anakin!! No!!!" Whereas Obi Wan said it as "No Anakin no!!" Clearly they are different and I can easily tell the difference in the voices.

Ok, you people are getting out of hand. OF COURSE it's on purpose, but it's not a separate shadow. It really is the shadow of Hayden Christiansen (sp?), but he's deliberately positioned so that it looks like Vader. As for the voice, it was definitely Obi-Wan. The scene is the battle between Dukoo and them (them being Obi-Wan and Anakin). I saw the movie yesterday, and I remember that while Obi-Wan was trying to make a plan, Anakin rushed in and obi-wan said that line exactly. It was a psychic thing. As for foreshadowing, how about Obi-Wan's line, "Why do I get the feeling that you're going to be the death of me?"?

This is kind of a half true egg. If you turn on the audio commentary on the DVD someone asks an animator if he edited the shadows to make it look like Darth Vader's helmet; he says no he did not, it just came out looking that way. Although they do make a mention that it was intended to kind of remind us all of the Episode 1 Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker poster.

The commentary on the DVD explains that it's pure chance - it's not supposed to be Vader's shadow, the shadow wasn't doctored, and Hayden wasn't positioned in any way. It just turned out that way. Of course they could be lying but I wouldn't have thought so since Lucas was pointing out other "eeggs" along the way - x-wings, tie fighters, the Anthony Daniels appearance etc.

A friend noticed the shadow the second time we watched Episode II. Try looking at Palpatine and Anakin as they move around the desk together, but just from the shoulders down. You'll swear your watching Vader and the Emperor on the Death Star. The scene with the shadow practically focused on the shadow. The fact that his hair explains the contour only supports the production values of the film. Nice work George.

Regarding on whether or not Qui-Gon says "Anakin, no!" during Yoda's mediation scene, it is in fact Qui-Gon saying it. One easy way to confirm this is to turn on the subtitles for the dvd. When you watch that scene the subtitle says "Qui-Gon: Anakin, no!". Pretty much confirms it, doesn't it?
