Thief: The Dark Project Easter Egg - Hidden Video and Mission Containing Bloopers and Trivia from Game Makers

Edit Thief's config file (dark.cfg located in Thief's root dir) and insert a line "play starting_mission 16" at its beginning. Now run the game, start a new one and skip the training mission. You will see a very silly video with "temporary drawings" and then you'll play a great mission containing a lot of "special effects", things that didn't make it to the final release of the game, and a lot of bloopers and generally funny things (how do you like the Burricks that literally f*rt themselves to death? :-D). Make sure to read the golden plates with information and explanations left by the programmers.

How do you do this? I found the video (b18.avi) in the MOVIES folder, but I can't get the level to run. I followed the instructions to the letter, and it just starts the first mission normally. Help!

This does only seem to work on the Gold version of the game, but you could try entering the line "starting_mission 16" leaving off the word "play".

The game is incredible! and i did get it to work, just use: 'starting_mission 16' and it should work, i put it in between the first line of text and the second.

I also tried this egg but got no results. I tried inserting the line as the first line and when that didn't work I tried inserting it right after the first line but all that happened both times were the normal first mission and opening movie running. I only have the standard version of the game so maybe it does only work on the Gold version. Does anyone know how to get it to work on the standard version?

There is an easier way to play this level. Install and run the Dromed Editor (usually included on the cd) and open Mission 18 which comes with it. Now simply go to 'Game Mode' in the Game toolbar.

NOTE: You have to put the "starting_mission 16" in the User.cfg file for it to work properly. And, if I remember properly (it's been a while since I've player Thief), you can just run the "goldskip.exe" to go directly to that level. BTW: The bloopers level is the same as the Baffords level, but oddly and strangly different. There are various plaques throught the mission that give information about different bugs and things cut from the original non-Gold Thief.

Oh yeah, Thief is a classic game. It was only surpassed by its sequal, Thief 2. It essentially started what we have come to know as stealth in videogames.
