Sober (Tool) Easter Egg - Hidden Voice

Are you sure it isn't your own mother shouting, for your music is much too loud? I can't hear anything!

I've always heard something there, but even with my keen sense of hearing, I can't make it out to save my life. It sounds like some form of whisper or something, although I know Tool's famous for mixing sh*t like this into their music (I guess Opiate's got the sound of a phone ringing mixed into one of the songs as to confuse people - can't remember where it's at for the life of me, though)

On Opiate, the title track is the one with the ringing phone. It happens around 4:50 into the song.

The added stuff is what makes Tool so interesting. Tool is something you can't listen to lightly, you have to listen closely most of the time. I've heard the speaking in Sober, and the ringing in Opiate. I mean...why wouldn't they do something like that when on the Aenima album, they have filler tracks like Caesaro Summability and ions (-). And then there is Disgustipated (not an egg or anything, but there is the monologue at the end of it, after the somewhere around 10 minutes of crickets. I mean, why wouldn't they do something like that?

The voice can be clearly heard if you listen to the song through a stereo with GOOD AND REAL surround sound. In the rear channels, there is a muffled voice. Although, to me, it always sounded like someone yelling, "Help! Let me out!" followed by a pounding noise.

Tool is just tooling with you. "It was daylight when you woke up, you look up to the sky, that make blue be your color"

This egg is a load of bull... I've played that part over and over again, as load as I can through different treble and bass filters and I hear nothing...And I've tried it on both album and radio releases. Unless you have a weird version of the song, its not there...

I do hear someone, but I'm not sure I can agree he's saying anything similar to "Turn that sh*t down". It sounds more to me like "help let me out" such as mentioned above...

I hear nothing. I used a wave editor and played with it forever, but got nothing. What version do you have?

It sounds like he just says "Tell Me Why" like in the lyrics. i cant say i can hear it but there is a muffle. i guess ill have to try louder with more bass :P

Uh, Greenman. Quick question. Where did you find a copy of Sober in true surround? If you're listening to it in surround, it's surely not off a CD. The format for the CDAudio file is a stereo format. You may hear some surround seperation, but it's undoubtedly EMULATED by frequency/channel seperation in your amplifier. (Which must be a kick-ass system, by the way.) Like Dolby Pro-Logic or SurroundStudio or any of various methods used to produce four distinctly different signals out a stereo signal. Unless you are listening on a Quadrophonic record, I sincerely doubt that you've heard a true surround version of Sober. I doubt that TOOL even bothered to record it in surround or quadrophonic or 5.1 or any other format than Stereo and probably even joint stereo at that. Not worth the time or money to record something that only a handful of people would be able to properly appreciate. On the other hand, knowing where those frequency seperations occur in your amp may be a good clue as to how one might more clearly hear this particular bit of Maynard's wisdom.

Hey, about four minutes into "Sober", there's this muffled screaming in the background, isn't there? Yes, there is. While it was thought to be a production error for some time, it turns out now that it's Maynard shouting, though not shouting explicitly "turn that sh*t down" as was previously thought. If you had it up loud enough, you know, you might think it was a parent or the neighbors. It occurs midway through the song: "...trust me, trust me; why can't (*) we not (*) be sober..." , where the *'s are.

im not 100% on this as i was tripping when i first heard it...but i played with an equalizer on the song an got this out of it..could be help me but i dunno here goes : Hey, Hey, look at yourself, what are you doing, stop it, stop it now. after the hey hey or help me help me part it gets really low....but goes from like 3:58 to 4:20 in the song...heheh 420. Weird part is there is an audible change right at 4:20 on the song, like it almost gets a bit louder right when the muffled voice stops.

if you know anything about tool songs and some earlier apc songs they are recorded off-track. meaning not perfect tracking. you will never be able to get the true surround effect. my friend has the full jbl/crown set-up for his home/movie theater. it was professionally set-up for true movie theater surround sound(a sh!t load of money).

Just because you can't hear it, don't say it isn't there. The only reason I found this page was that I did a search for a hidden voice in Sober. I've known about it since 2000-2001. It is there. And everyone keeps talking about surround sound and high quality... personally I think that is the wrong way to go. Use the small speakers, ie laptop, and probably crappier is better. The way I stumbled upon this was listening to sober on a laptop, nearly dosing off and then hearing a guy saying something that sounded like, 'hey, let me out.' It is in the song, trust me, trust me, trust me, trust me.
