Contact Easter Egg - Corona Borealis

This is probably most interesting to stargazers. The constellation Corona Borealis appears too often to be an accident in Contact. When they are on the beach making contact, watch the shooting stars apear out of a ring of stars. When he pours sand out of his hand you see the ring of stars again as reflections of sand grains, (when he looks at her ring.) At the end of the movie she pours sand out of her hand and you see it again (Along with a glitch on her thumb left by
the editor)

If I am not mistaken, this pattern also appears during the scene when Elly's father collapses. When Elly looks down the stairs, the popcorn her father has spilled also makes the same shape.

I'm thought this "C" shape was more of a reference to Carl Sagan who died during production of the film. I know it's back to front but it's still in the shape of a C.

Those scenes you mention were shot toward the end of the movie. In fact - I think I remember reading that the scene where her dad died was among the last few scenes shot. That could explain the C theory. I really think they should leave the ending right where it is. Without Carl, I would hate to see what the sequel might look like.

The C shape is in the movie as a reference to her childhood and a painting she had. Several areas in the movie you will see a poster containing the arrangement of stars and it is a kind of visual continuance in the movie. Be sure to look for it (the poster) at least 5 times.

The formation of the stars is definitely the same formation as Corona Borealis. If you look at the web site http://www.slivoski.com/astronomy/corbor.htm it shows you the exact image just backwards. Count them and see if they match up. And also the popcorn thing really blew my mind that someone else caught that!Kudos

I cannot tell you how relieved I am that there are other people who have noticed this "C" thing!!! I tried to mention this on another site, and was ignored. I don't have the book at my disposal right now, but I did do a little research into this "C" thing (which I didn't realize looked like a particular constellation...I will be looking into that!), and I recall that there WAS a reference in the book to it. I haven't read the whole book, but I seem to remember there's something that might be related to this particular shape on the very last page. I just love observant people!
