Touch Me (The Doors) Easter Egg - Stronger Than Dirt?

Jim says "Stronger Than Dirt" on the last 4 notes. It's definitely from the "Ajax" ads of the day. I saw a list in a fanzine of other (fairly obscure) pop songs that also worked "Stronger Than DIrt" in to them. I've never heard the "selling out" story before. It's an interesting possibility. Another sort of "egg" is that Jim Morrison was trying to sound like Perry Como (A popular 50's-60's singer) in "Riders On The Storm".

Dammit. Where did anonymous get his/her information from?!!! According to Ray Manzarek in his book "Light My Fire" the DOORS did not sell the rights to the song to some car company! Jim was pissed off that the rest of the members were even considering selling the rights to the song.

In the movie, Ray, Robby, and John sell the rights to "Light My Fire" to Buick behind Jim's back. Jim catches the commercial on a small TV in the studio (yeah, right) and gets ticked off. He subsequently throws the TV at Ray and smashes it to pieces. In short, yes this scene is probably total fiction, but the easter egg is still relevant in that Jim was mocking the idea that The Doors had become a commercial-friendly pop band. Wow, a lot of hullabaloo over maybe nothing at all! "Stronger Than Dirt" was a slogan for Ajax. But did you know that "Stronger Than Dirt" was also a song by Soul Inc. from Louisville, KY which was released in 1967 - years before Jim Morrison supposedly said it at the end of Touch Me??? Maybe Jim liked the song by Soul, Inc, and the words "Stronger Than Dirt" fit the hook from Touch Me perfectly, so he said it. Maybe he didn't say it at all. It's hard to hear exactly what he says. But since we are making assumptions now, did you know the Grateful Dead also had a song "Stronger Than Dirt" in the 70s? Maybe The Doors FORCED The Dead at gunpoint to do the song... all because Jim was unhappy with his bandmates selling out to a car manufacturer or a cleaning product manufacturer or... ummm, maybe space aliens. Did you notice how The Doors and The Dead are kind of similar? Maybe they were ONE AND THE SAME! And wow, Jim Morrison is supposedly dead, and he sang for The Doors.... and Jerry Garcia is supposedly dead, and he sang for The Dead... maybe they are both the same and maybe they actually were the band Soul Inc who started this Stronger Than Dirt dilemma! Now THERE'S a new Egg for you!

C'mon, people. I heard Robby Krieger discuss this on a radio interview not long ago, and it really was just a dumb joke on the old detergent commercials. Very similar to the "fried chicken!" shout at the end of Queen's "One Vision," and I don't hear anyone reading any deep meanings into THAT.

Further up the post someone says IN THE STUDIO ON A SMALL TV (Yeah, Right!); I have no idea what that end part means, but if it's saying that they would have a large TV in a Music Recording studio, let me tell you they very likely would have just a small, crappy one. I've recorded in small and large studios and you'd be surprised just how rough 'hicks' like to live! And for the record a the rock band FRENZY has an album called "Stronger than Dirt". Excellent stuff from the 80's/90's hard rock era. It's worth checking out as the tunes are pretty cool, minus most of the generics of that time. It still sounds good today. Google search for FRENZY+STRONGER+THAN+DIRT. Peace!

This really goes back to the "Strange Days" album, on which "My Eyes Have Seen You," consciously or not, joined the same trend as Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" and possibly one or two others I've since forgotten, that used the first four notes of the Ajax Laundry Detergent commercial. I think Ajax complained, so just as Morrison is said to have yelled "higher," despite the Sullivan Show's request that they change the word in "Light My Fire" to "better" (the Stones sang "Let's Spend 'Some Time' Together"), being blatant with "Stronger Than Dirt" at the end of a commercial song like "Touch Me" was his way of thumbing his nose.

I even heard that it was Robbie Krieger. 'Anyone know for real? Referring to the Doors song Touch Me, and the "stronger than dirt" statement at the end of the song, AlexBravo wrote that "Stronger Than Dirt" was also a song by Soul Inc. which was released in 1967. This is true, but AlexBravo went on to note that was YEARS before Touch Me came out. Not so--Touch Me was already on the pop charts by December of 1968, only months later.
