X-Files Easter Egg - Clyde Bruckman's Final Movie
Writer Darin Morgan put a number of obscure comedy-movie in-jokes into "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose." Clyde Bruckman was a b&w comedy director back in the 20's and 30's who worked with W.C. Fields and Laurel &Hardy. The hotel the killer works at is El Damfino, a nod to the boat Damfino in the Buster Keaton movie "The Boat." Detectives Cline and Havez are named after silent movie director Eddie Cline, and Jean C. Havez (who worked with Bruckman). The name of the dead man they find out in the forest under the car is "Claude Dukenfield", which was the real-life name of W.C. Fields, who also worked with Bruckman. At the end of the episode, Scully is watching a Laurel & Hardy movie, "The Bullfighters." The fact that the Bruckman character has a vision involving a Nazi may be a nod to Chaplin's "The Great Dictator."
