Internet Explorer Easter Egg - Color Me Crap

Quite randomly, found out that when coding HTML one can specify the color "crap" within the font tag. Simply write <font color="crap"> and the resulting bit of text will have a light brown tinge.

CRAP. here's what really happens. the browser tries to find the color "crap" and can't. so it tries to make a hexadecimal color out of it. since hexadecimal goes from 0 to F, it interprets the C and the A and the R and P are counted as 0(zero.) since hexidecimal are in three groups of two, it assumes zeros for the last group. so we get C0A000 which in decimal is 190 for Red, 160 for Green, and 0 for blue.

it is correct that the words are interpreted as hex colors. doesn't matter what words you put in, as long as it has some letters a-f... eg: you suck shows black... crapmonkeys shows a pinkish color...

It works also if you just type in the color name. Of course, this is for only basic colors... blue, green, black, purple, red, ping, gray... etc. Any basic color that you can select from Microsoft Word's font color menu. Just as long as it's not one with an adjective, like bright or dark, etc. Also, the default color is black, so if you type in some non-hex numbers, such as xyzzy, it just displays black background.

Guys! This is stupid. Yohimbe9 ([email protected]) has explained this phenomenon clearly. It is not an egg per se -- more of a random effect which seems to amuse some people. If you guys want to see some more random effects, open up the calculator application and try multiplying crazy numbers. You never know *what* you're gonna get!

It's coded in hexadecimal. I know this, being that I program websites myself. It's all a total coincidence. When's the last time you heard of "cheese" being green? Only when it's moldy. And not a vibrant green. Furthermore, blood is not fuschia. People are stupid. By the way, typing in "00ff00" gives you green. Yay! And ee0000 gives you blood. Coincidence....or not?

Try the following colours: "beer" "blood" "booze" "tequila" "vodka" etc. The only one that vaguely looks like its object is "beer". I think this has to do with the way IE hex decodes the colours.

OK... Try this for a splash of color. In the address bar type: *** javascript: void ( document.bgColor = '#000000' ) *** (copy and paste everything in between the sets of asterisks, NOT including the asterisks themselves). Now click "Enter". Of course, the code may be edited to the color you like. #000000 is hexadecimal HTML for black; #FFFFFF is hexadecimal for white. You can only display the 216 Standard browser colors.

Heh, my name (alex/#A0E000) makes a nice green. IE supports dozens of color names, not just the basic 16, from aliceblue (#F0F8FF) to yellowgreen (#9ACD32) as well as variants. And for anyone who cares, I wrote a program a while back to make colors for me... I suppose it's not that userfriendly for someone who has no clue how hex colors work, but I like it anyway. www.nelcorp.com/alex/colorhex01.exe, requires the VB6 runtimes.

As fascinating as this is, I don't suggest using it on your pages because it won't work in a real browser that sticks to the HTML standards (such as Opera) Although, this is probably a good thing... fuschia and crap-brown are definitely not on my top ten list of pleasant background colors.

Also, if you type in "about:" (without the quotation marks) and type in something after the final arrow thing, the writing will appear on the screen along with that color selected.

I've found that typing in "fuschia" gives you tan. Why, I don't know. Here are some other results: 12345 = weird but cool greyish blue -> keep going up and it gets lighter Napoleon = brown Office = really light green, awesome color Desk = maroon Crew = greenish yellow -> sort of a "pee green" France = light purple UnitedStatesofAmerica = dark blue Antarctica = purple This is all the time I had! I'd just like to add that the reason none of you are getting a pinkish colour when you type "fuschia" is because you're all spelling it incorrectly. It's FUCHSIA. If you type *that* in, IE will recognize it.

OK boys and girls. Time for a lesson in hex colouring. The hex triplet that websites use for colour (eg white: FFFFFF) are split into 3 different sets (1: FF 2: FF 3: FF [perhaps white wasn't the best example).) This allows for 256 * 256 * 256 different possible colours. Each triplet may hold a value between 00 and FF (FF == 255 in decimal.) The first triplet specifies the amount of RED in the colour. The second triplet specifies the amount of GREEN in the colour. The third triplet specifies the amount of BLUE in the colour. Hence "RGB triplet". As such, FF0000 will get you bright red, 00FF00 will get you bright green, and 0000FF will get you bright blue. The colour values work the same way as the spectrum. 00 == absence of colour. FF == full colour. As such, the absence of all colour, 000000 is black, and the presence of all colour, FFFFFF is white. When you type in crap, as one of the first posters pointed out, the browser converts it to hex, any character outside of the range of 0-9, A-F is converted to zeros, and any missing characters of the 6 is assumed to be a zero: CR == C0 AP == A0 00 == 00 So out of 255, you have 192 red, 160 green, and no blue. A brownish yellowish, really ugly colour. Entirely and purely coincidental. Browsers do, however, understand normal every day colours. ie. blue, green, orange, white, black, etc.

I agree with the people who are saying that it's just the computer trying to read it as hexadecimal. "CRAP" has already been explained, "COKE" is just the computer turning it into '#C00E0', which is that red color. I tested it myself. It's the same with these other ones. Some of them MIGHT be a trick that Bill Gates hid in Microsoft, because Microsoft does recognise some of the color names, but i doubt it. If you don't believe me, do the JavaScript code to change the color (explained somewhere else in these comments), and for the color, type in '#C00E0', and look what you get: "Coke." Try it with '#C0A000', and you get the "Crap color." I'm sorry, but this is a coincidence.

I have some more. There are a few basic colours that you get with three, four and five letter words, i.e. royal blue, maroon etc. If you type in some phrases then you get much more interesting colours! chocolate = greyish-green eastereggs = HORRIBLE yellow ihatemicrosoft = powder blue eggyolk = pink iloveyou = green lifesucks = green/blue abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxy = red thepizzaistakingovermybrain = orange (don't ask where I get the phrases from!) iseedeadpeople = bright green Hope that people find even more!
