Turtledove, Harry Easter Egg - A Cameo by George Orwell

On page 108 of World War: Upsetting the balance by Harry Turtledove a character named Eric Blair makes an appearance. This is interesting because Eric Blair is George Orwell's real name (George Orwell is just a pen name). This is certainly true because on this page is states that the character Eric Blair lived in Burma and was wounded fighting for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. All of these things George Orwell, or rather Eric Blair, did in real life.

Why is that an easter egg? Harry Turtledove's books are an alternate history format...he relies heavily upon actual historical people, places, and events in order to create a believable atmosphere. I even took an American History class where Guns of the South was on the recommended (though not required) reading list. Not because of it's accuracy in the events, but in it's accuracy in the portrayal of the times. Turtledove is an historian by degree.

However,he becomes a semi-recurring character in the World War:xxxxx The Balance (where xxxxx is the first part of the title). He also appears on pages 263-264 of Upsetting the Balance, but not in either In The Balance or Striking the Balance. Hope this helps

You'll also find reference to Mark Twain in another alternate-history novel of his, "How Few Remain". In it, a newspaper editor by the name of Samuel Clemens is one of the characters. It's just a part of his writing style.
