I was never able to find the "See You Next Wednesday" in Animal House, which Landis directed. Anybody know where it is?

I believe I heard that "See you next Wednesday" is in reference to a line in 2001 where a character receives a video transmission that ends with "See you next Tuesday". Perhaps a tribute Landis' favorite movie?

I just read an interview with John Landis in which he stated that he has only used this phrase in five or six of his movies, not all of them...

In Trading Places, it appears on a poster in Jamie Lee Curtis' apartment. Also ... it's definitely "See you next WEDNESDAY" at the end of Frank's parents' birthday message in 2001.

See you next wednesday was the name of the porn flick that David went in to see in An American Werewolf in London. It is also on the poster in Jamie Lee Curtis's apartment in "Trading Places"

It's also on the recruiting poster in Spies Like Us. It's uttered by a porno actor offscreen in American Werewolf. It's on the movie marquee in Kentucy Fried Movie. There are others that escape me right now...

It's also a movie poster in "Blues Brothers." In the pilot episode of "Dream On," Martin says to his maid, "See you next Tuesday," to which she quickly corrects him by saying "Wednesday." There's also a plaque on the wall of a directors office in "Into the Night." (Talk about a movie PACKED with in jokes...) I couldn't find it in "Innocent Blood" or "Dying To Get Rich," and that really bothers me.

the explanation with the trailers landis used to make is nonsense. "see you next wednesday" is the last sentence spoken by a human being in "2001 - a space odyssey" by mr.kubrick before HAL starts to kill the crew off. it is said by bowman's parents in the transmission from earth he watches.

See You Next Wednesday was The first script Mr. Landis wrote. In his first feature film, called "Schlock" the phrase is repeated so often that you can't help but laugh by the third time you hear it.

Isn't "See you next Wednesday" a quote from Casablanca (as is "round up the usual suspects", from which bryan Singer presumably got his famous film's title)?

AndyC writes:
See you next Wednesday was John Landis's first ever script/screenplay written. It was never made into a film but if John uses any 'bits' of that original script in one of his films, he always credits it, with the phrase 'hidden' in the film somewhere. Not all his films have the phrase.

The "thriller" one is the best. I would love to see a copy of the See You Next Wendsday script to see what Landis used from it in all the movies with the line.

The phrase "See you next Wednesday", was the title of his first screenplay and he always tries to get it into a film somewhere. In "Trading Places" and "Coming to America" it's on a subway poster. In "The Blues Brothers", it's on a billboard. In "The Stupids", it's on the back of a bus. In the "Twilight Zone" it's is spoken in German.

Casablanca? That's a good question. Its first appearance is usually attributed to the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. As I recall, astronaut Frank Poole's father/mother ended their (apparently) weekly video message to him with that phrase. Might have the characters wrong. See You Next Wednesday appeared repeatedly in many John Landis movies, starting with Schlock. (Some have said it first appeared in an earlier screenplay he wrote) It was, I think, always a movie within the movie. When I was a kid, movie theaters used to change what they were showing on Wednesdays- I always figured Kubrick was referring to that fact but I can't prove it. Kubrick used movies and movie theaters as symbols in his movies.
