Layla Easter Egg - Tribute to Bird!

The great 70's band "Derik and the Dominoes" put out one album. It was the legendary work of art called "Layla".

Eric Clapton with Dwayne Allman as a fantastic second lead guitar and legendary drummer Jim Gordon wrote "Layla". The three of them told the heart wrenching and string bending tale of spurned love that was lifted from Arabian legend about the prince who could not possess the king's wife. It closely paralleled Clapton's affair with George Harrison's wife, Patti. It must have worked, later she left "king" George for Eric.

The egg?? At very end of this breath taking song is a bird tweeting. That bird call was a tribute to Charlie Parker(The Bird). The song structure was also lifted. In a sly thank you, Dwayne Allman tweets his guitar at the end of the song to salute Bird for use of his song structure.

Thats really cool, i'm a major Duane Allman fan & don't recall ever hearing about the bird at the end of layla, & the best ending of a song ever in my opinion, even besides that reason for it.

The hammer handed piano playing-- oh that great solo-- was by Jim Gordon. He started out with the Everly Brothers and later after DATD, Mad Dogs and Englishmen(Joe Cocker, Leon Russell).

This explains why Fortran 5 ends their cover of "Layla" with the classic Roland synth bird sound and the classic Roland synth sax sound layered together. Nifty.

It should probably also be noted that a few years after Jim Gordon wrote what is probably the most emotional love song in Rock & Roll history, that he was convicted of murdering his parents.....

Actually, Charlie Parker's nickname was Bird and YardBird was not his nickname. His nickname comes from Yardbird because of the song he wrote, YardBird Suite.
