Rear Window (1954) Easter Egg - Wheelchair!

Jimmy Stewart plays an aggressive successful photographer who broke his leg while covering a major car race. He must sit in his apartment with
a full length cast on his leg; while confined to a wheelchair.

To pass the time he spies on his neighbors through
his long photo lense camera. He does this out of the rear window to his apartment. He watches casual life through their rear windows. He studies them.

>>>> In the fourth apartment from the left is a fellow playing/composing on a piano. Behind him is a clock repairman winding a clock on the mantel. The repairman looks right at the camera.
It is the director, Alfred Hitchcock, in a brief cameo.

The songwriter is played by Ross Bagdasarian, who was the creator and voice of the Chipmunks.

smapdi you are wrong. Some early movies(i.e. "The 39 Steps")Hitch did not appear in, either because he did not have the idea or just simply did not want to appear. Look for the book "The Art of Alfred Hitchcock" by Donald Spoldo(I think).

I threw this out in the "Psycho" comments as well, so I may as well do it again: Of the fifty-four films Hitch made, he only appeared in thirty-nine of them.

The 39 steps was certainly not the first Hitchcock cameo. Your way way off. go back to his first big movie, silent film days, 1926 the lodger, and he appears when the lodger is hanging from the iron fence (Jesus reference of innocence) at the end of the movie. I am almost sure he is in blackmail as well, I just can't remember where.

He only appeared in most of his movies. Also, the man in that apartment is Hitch. It shows it on the back of the movie cover from the collection.

Alfred Hitchcock made a total of 37 self-referential cameos in his films over a 50 year period (from 1926-1976). Hitchcock's first appearance was in his third film, The Lodger (1926), and then in just six more of his British films. The most ingenious cameo appearances were in films with limited sets, as in Lifeboat (1944), Rope (1948), and Dial M for Murder (1954). One recurring theme was that Hitchcock carried a stringed instrument in some of the cameos. The first cameo apperance was only because he was a short of an actor. Here is the link to all of his cameos with photos. http://hitchcock.tv/cam/cameos.html
