My friends & I listened to that song so many times when the c.d. came out. We thought it was hilarious that they wrote a song purely about masturbation. It's funny when he sounds sad & he says, 'I was all by myself.'

from what i hear, the song was recorded in a record studio owned by greenday's old label, Lookout! Records. it was a joke because they broke in in the middle of the night. i don't know if this is true or not.

To goddesskiki, "Longview" is basically all about masturbating too. To everyone else, this song is much more funny live, when they replace "Oh yeah, did I mention," with "I had an erection."

my little brother loved this song so much when i played it to him, he showed all his friends. hmmm....... lol Oh yeah, and my sister reckons that it is a kind of piss take on an Alanis Morrisette song, you know the one where she goes in to his room and goes on about how she 'really shouldnt be here'. Not sure if this is feasible but thought you could peruse it.

Well, "Dookie" by Green Day came out in February of 1994, while Alanis came out in the summer of '95. So, unless Green Day was exploring the great white wilderness of Canada, my answer would be no. Perhaps Alanis stole it from Green Day, now that sounds incredibly more logical --:)

Actually, contrary to popular belief, the song is not about masturbation. It is sung by Tre, and is about the time he went over to a friend's house, and found the friend dead in his bedroom. If you listen carefully, you can hear him start to cry towards the end of the song.

He's not crying, he's laughing but trying to turn it into a cry. And its incredibly obvious!

There's a reference to the hidden song's singer on the back of the cd case. Ever wonder why there's a crowd holding up the Ernie puppet from Sesame Street? It's because they got the voice of Ernie (or one hell of an impersonator) to come in and do the vocals for the song. If you don't believe me, watch Sesame Street and then listen to the hidden song and notice that the voice of Ernie and the voice of the hidden song's singer are nearly (if not exactly) the same.

This song is not sung by Ernie from sesame street. i went to see a greenday concert this past month in Missasauga and they played this song. Tré sung it. it sounds exact the same. tré also plays the guitar on the song.

The song was recorded at someones house when they were all stoned on a 4 track. Its not about anyone dying, its about wanking. Tre sings it and plays it.

All By Myself was recorded at a party on a trashy little recorder while everyone in the room was very very stoned. He's not crying, he's laughing...and you can hear other people laughing in the background. In the beginning there is an obvious, and very loud and obnoxious, laughing person. and yes, my friends, it is about masturbation. in the beginning, before the loud laughing, you can hear them say something like 'thank you lady' then someone saying 'were recording shut up'....how does anyone think this is a sad song? there are high background vocals too. of course tre was playing the guitar, a surprise? billie joe plays the drums too. till we meet next, cheese and biscuits everyone!

I have the cassette, and the is also a hidden song on it but it is a different one. It says "all I know is that I don't know nothin'". I don't know the rest of the lyrics right now.

That song is awesome!! You should also look on the back of your case. I know this is true if there is an Ernie doll above the pit then you have an older limited copy. After a bunch of parents got pissed because they thought it was like a sesame street album and bought it for their 5 year olds the band took it off the album.

even if the alanis crap came out before dookie, cds have had secret songs on them forever and a day. nirvana's nevermind was the first i sound. endless namless come in way after something in the way(at least on some versions, the few so many copies didn't have it)

Wrangle... I also have the cassette and the song you are referring to is not a secret song, well at least not on my copy. That song is called Knowledge and was originaly done by Operation Ivy, but not in the hawiian style with the coconut sounding thing. I'm not sure on this but i'm pretty sure Green day put the song in without permission from producers or something, i don't know what the garbled talk at the beginning is but i think it says that it is used without permission. But anyway, if you havn't heard any Operation Ivy, you should get some, it rocks

First of all, all you that said Tre is not laughing, and that the song is about masturbating: well done for not being a dumbass. How can anyone possibly think this song is about a death of a friend, and that he is really crying? Shocking. Secondly, the extra song on the tape version is Knowledge by Operation Ivy, whereas on the CD version it is All By Myself. Knowledge is on Green Day's first album on Lookout Records, '1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours'. Check it out, it's amazing.

It's very obviously about masturbation. Notice the deliberate and exaggerated panting at the start. Notice the "slapping" sound near the end he makes with his cheek. The "pop" at the end confirms it, to "pop" is a metaphor for ejaculation. So no more arguments!

OK, I looked on the back of my "Dookie" case, and I do indeed have an Ernie doll above the pit. What I would like to know is, what stupid dumbass parents would by the album for their 5 year old kid, thinking it was Sesame Street?! First off, it's on the back of the CD, so you would need to actually be loking at the CD to see it, and presumably if you have picked the CD up to look at the back, you have also looked at the front - now please expain to me, anyone, how the cover artwork for "Dookie" could be in anyway confused with Sesame Street, or how a parent could look at the cover and not realise, even if they had seen the Ernie doll, that it was NOT a Sesame Street album. Duh! The cover also says Green Day in huge writing, and I don't know about anyone else, but I'm sure when I bought my copy it had one of thos frickin' annoying Parental Advisory stickers. I think these parents badly need their eyes tested and their common sense restored. Thank you and goodnight.

I found this song when I was 8 years old, shortly after the cd came out. I love this song, Green Day is such an unpredictable band sometimes! That's why they are my fave. I have the original cd case too, with the Ernie on the back. 10 years, and the cd is still working perfectly.

I sang that song and played guitar to it at camp with a friend of mine. There were adult chaperones there too. They were clueless. It was pretty funny.
