Citizen Kane Easter Egg - The Crusader

In the scene where it shows Kane unwrapping the sled that Mr. Thatcher gave him, pause the tape and look at the name of the sled. The name is "The Crusader" and there is also a picture of a medieval knight, but that's irrelivant. The name "The Crusader" was a joke among the cast and crew because Willaim Randolph Hearst, the real Charles Kane, was always a crusader even if he didn't believe in his cause.

"Who was in the room when he said 'Rosebud'?" is an old question, but near the end of the film Raymond the butler specifically claims that he was with Kane when he (Kane) died. If you want to see something really eerie, look closely at the shadowy reporters in the screening-room sequence after the newsreel. One of them is Joseph Cotton, who costars as Kane's old friend Jed Leland and has no business being in the screening room.

In fact, most of the cast is in this screening room scene, just after the "News on the March" newsreel.

Actually Rosebud has nothing at all to do with the sled at all. If you watch the movie RKO 182 or something close to that, it's an HBO movie that's like the making of Citizen Kane, you'll see that it's actually a reference to a part of the female anatomy and another poke at Hearst. They go into detail about how it was supposed to get to him. I have always viewed "Rosebud" as both of them seeking what they wanted the most. For Kane it was a return to his family and innocence and for Welles is was that final stab against Hearst.
