St. Elsewhere Easter Egg - Dr. Craig Channels Himself
Dr. Mark Craig (played by actor William Daniels), the hospital's snarling cardio surgeon, injured his hand at the end of the 85-86 season. In September, 1986, we find him in Philadelphia, where he has returned to his alma mater, University of Pennsylvania Medical School, to see if the injury can be fixed.
He and his wife (played by Daniels' real wife) are wandering the City and end up in front of Independence Hall. It is mid-July. He complains, "It's hot as hell in Philadelphia."
After some self-recriminations, he turns to his wife and wonders why she married him, commenting, "I'm obnoxious and disliked, did you know that?"
The two quotes, spoken in a bit of a cadence, are lines from the Broadway musical (and movie) "1776" and are spoken by the character John Adams.
In the original Broadway production and in the movie, John Adams is played by the very same William Daniels.
